UAL Creative Stratagy 2022-2032Thu Jul 19 2022
“The world is facing up to deep-rooted social and economic problems, but by working together with others we can play our part in solving them. Our third guiding policy, therefore, is to change the world through our creative endeavour.”

I wanted to create a piece that highlights the contrast between the rigid social and economic structures and the fluidity of creative practices, and how they challenge these infrastructures. I’ll show this mainly through form and composition.

I started this project by creating a sphere and explore the sculpting functions on Cinema4D. This was my first time using this section of cinema4d and I found it fascinating. I then started creating the ‘organic’ shapes. I was mainly inspired by roots and neurones. I created these by making a piece and then creating a random pattern with them.

The final piece I created was supposed to symbolise the idea of the economic and social structures and how creativity can circumvent these aspects. The final piece also has an ‘unfinished’ look to it since these structures are not stagnant and there’s still a long way to go. I also thought it was fitting because this is for a 10 year long strategy, so making a finalised piece didn’t fit with what I wanted to showcase. Finally, I was going to do contrasting textures and colours between the organic elements and the rigid ones, but I ended up liking the metal structure as a whole a lot more. I still think that this can be perceive as creativity being part of these structures, but having a need to break free from them.
