- ‘Not I’ Title Sequence
For this project, I created a title sequence based on Samuel Beckett’s play Not I. Our task was to choose from a selection of podcasts, plays, or books—works without strong existing visual identities—allowing for more creative interpretation. Not I stood out to me as the most compelling choice.
The play itself is minimalistic, with a single spotlight illuminating only the actress’s lips as she rapidly delivers a monologue. Initially, I considered drawing inspiration from the iconic lips in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I ultimately felt this approach was too similar to the play’s original staging. Instead, I explored other ways to visually represent its intensity and disorienting nature.
One of my early ideas involved a spinning light bulb illuminating text with each rotation. While the concept had potential, the footage wasn’t achieving the effect I wanted, leading me to shift my approach.
Final Concept & Execution
Since Not I is entirely text-driven, I decided to embrace typography as the central visual element. My primary inspiration came from Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void title sequence, which relies solely on typography to create an immersive, high-energy experience. I carefully selected a dramatic, theatrical-sounding track with strong beats, allowing me to synchronize the text dynamically to the rhythm.Though minimalist in execution, this project remains one of my favorites. The bold, type-driven approach captures the essence of the play—chaotic, urgent, and emotionally charged—while staying true to the spirit of experimental storytelling.
